Job Description

GENERAL FUNCTION:

The Structural Engineer is responsible for performing engineering design and calculations as required to support the Functional Hull Design group and overseeing manufacture, construction and installation of structure and outfitting items. The Structural Engineer reports directly to the Engineering Hull Lead.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following statements are intended to describe the general responsibilities and level of work to be performed but is not to be construed as an exhaustive list:

  • Responsible for preparing the structural design and calculations of scantlings and other structural items for the Functional Hull Design group including foundation design and analysis.
  • Responsible for reviewing the technical content/quality of structural deliverables to ensure design meets contract and regulatory requirements.
  • Responsible for providing technical and engineering guidance as required.
  • Responsible for providing technical support to the Production Design group within the Engineering Department as needed.
  • Responsible, as team member, for schedule compliance.
  • Responsible for attending/supporting meetings with customer, regulatory agencies, and other departments.
  • Accountable for compliance with the project specifications/contract, regulatory requirements, and standard practices.
  • Responsible for obtaining and reviewing vendor information and technical data as required.

DESIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES:

  • The ideal candidate is proactive and resourceful, able to recommend solutions for problems that arise and provide direction as needed.
  • Has a good understanding of all phases of marine vessel design and construction.
  • Has experience working in the following areas:
    1. Structure - Scantling design and arrangement and repair.
    2. Outfitting - Foundation design and analysis.
  • Experienced working within a team environment.
  • Ability to adhere to strict deadlines.
  • Experience interacting with production personnel, multiple design teams from several companies, customer representatives and equipment manufactures.
  • Can communicate and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of employees, customers, and subcontractors.
  • Has a strong working knowledge of Maritime Regulatory Authorities (i.e. ABS, DNV, NAVSEA, MIL, USCG, IMO, MSC, etc.)
  • Knowledge of various computer programs including AutoCAD, FEMAP, NAVIS, Microsoft Office Suite.

EXPERIENCE & TRAINING

Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering or related technical discipline with experience in engineering, shipbuilding and production processes.

Level A: 10 years plus experience

Level B: 5 - 10 years experience

Level C: 3 - 5 years experience

Level D: Less than 3 years experience
